What exactly is “nature” – and what internal and external images arise when we juggle with this term? The exhibition DISTURBANCE is dedicated to this elusive whole: nature as a space of existence that shelters us, yet does not belong to us. As a black box that defies any comprehensive human control or prediction. A (meta-)physical playground within which we navigate between connectedness and alienation.

DISTURBANCE  looks beyond idyllic idealizations to explore the essential approaches, inner concepts, and manifold levels of meaning of “nature,” which are brought to light by art in a socially critical, pure, and disturbing manner.

Was ist eigentlich „Natur“ – und welche inneren und äußeren Bilder entstehen, wenn wir mit diesem Terminus jonglieren? Die Ausstellung DISTURBANCE widmet sich dieser nicht abschließend greifbaren Gesamtheit: Natur als ein Existenzraum, der uns beherbergt, aber doch nicht gehört. Als eine Blackbox, die sich jeglicher vollumfänglichenmenschlichen Kontrolle oder Prognostik entzieht. Eine (meta-)physische Spielwiese, innerhalb derer wir uns zwischen Verbundenheit und Entfremdung bewegen.

DISTURBANCE sucht jenseits von idyllischen Verklärungen nach den essenziellen Zugängen, inneren Konzepten und mannigfaltigen Bedeutungsebenen von „Natur“, die gesellschaftskritisch, pur und størend von der Kunst zum Lichte geführt werden.

With NOT A TOY, Liza Mercedes creates an immersive world suspended between childhood, consumerism, social conditioning, and emotional abysses. Tattooed childlike figures, distorted objects, and subversive toy aesthetics collide with themes such as addiction, beauty standards, violence, social conditioning, and the (un)seen scars that shape us.

What at first appears loud, ironic, and almost playful reveals, upon closer inspection, a disturbing precision. Beneath the colourful surface lies a radical confrontation with the psychological and cultural traces of our society — with everything that is suppressed, trivialised, or left unspoken. Everything is colourful. Everything is loud.

Mit NOT A TOY erschafft Liza Mercedes eine immersive Welt zwischen Kindheit, Konsum, gesellschaftlicher Prägung und emotionalen Abgründen. Tätowierte Kinderfiguren, verfremdete Objekte und subversive Spielzeugästhetiken treffen auf Themen wie Sucht, Schönheitsideale, Gewalt, soziale Konditionierung und die unsichtbaren Narben, die uns formen.

Was zunächst grell, ironisch und beinahe spielerisch erscheint, entpuppt sich als präzise Analyse unserer Gegenwart. Hinter der bunten Oberfläche verbirgt sich eine intensive Auseinandersetzung mit den psychologischen und kulturellen Spuren, die unsere Gesellschaft hinterlässt. Mit allem, was verdrängt, verharmlost oder nie ausgesprochen wird.

Alles ist bunt. Alles ist laut.

Mishmash, a term of Yiddish origin describing a colourful mixture or medley, refers here to an artistic interplay – a gathering and conglomerate of diverse positions in painting, mixed media, and sculpture brought together under a fluid curatorial concept.

Different painterly approaches stand alongside figurative works whose visual languages and stylistic vocabularies merge with the artists’ individual life stories and artistic statements into a multiperspectival whole.

The group exhibition HALF A POUND OF ART was on view from January 22 to March 14.

In our annual exhibition series HALF A POUND OF ART, we unite strong positions of international artists offering innovative perspectives to the art world. The exhibited works are exclusively small format, with a maximum size of 50 × 50 cm. There is no thematic curation – crucial are the format and the artistic excellence. The exhibition spans painting, sculpture, photography, installation, conceptual and video art. It presents works that challenge perception, celebrate detail, and reveal technical sophistication. HALF A POUND OF ART is conceived as an homage to the small format – a field of artistic precision and creative intensity.

Die Gruppenausstellung HALF A POUND OF ART fand vom 22. Januar bis zum 14. März statt.

In unserer jährlichen Ausstellungsreihe HALF A POUND OF ART vereinen wir herausragende internationale Künstlerinnen und Künstler, die mit innovativen Ansätzen den zeitgenössischen Kunstdiskurs bereichern.
Gezeigt werden ausschließlich kleinformatige Werke mit einer maximalen Größe von 50 × 50 cm. Eine thematische Vorgabe gibt es nicht – entscheidend sind Format und Qualität der Arbeiten. Die Ausstellung umfasst Malerei, Skulptur, Fotografie, Installation, Konzept- und Videokunst. Sie zeigt Werke, die unsere Wahrnehmung herausfordern, die Liebe zum Detail wecken und durch technische sowie konzeptuelle Raffinesse überzeugen. HALF A POUND OF ART ist eine Hommage an das oft unterschätzte Kleinformat – ein Terrain größter Präzision und Ausdruckskraft.

Within the exhibition „Fragmented Identity“ the Spanish artist Yolanda Dorda explores themes of womanhood, femininity, and the ongoing quest for self-discovery through art. The solo show marks a new creative phase in which self-portraiture becomes an introspective medium—a silent dialogue with the mirror, where the artist (or the depicted female figure) seeks to find and redefine herself.

The works reflect both a personal and collective journey, examining how women embrace and transform their roles over time. Maturity is not merely a biological process but an emotional and social evolution—a rebirth in which stereotypes are shed to make way for new dimensions of existence. Through painting, these moments of introspection, vulnerability, and empowerment are captured, inviting the viewer to reflect on their own identity and the many layers that shape the feminine experience.

At its core, this series portrays not just faces but also the traces of time, inner questioning, and the quiet acceptance of an ever-evolving femininity.

Mit der Ausstellung „Fragmented Identity“ erkundet die spanische Künstlerin Yolanda Dorda Themen wie Frausein, Weiblichkeit und die andauernde Suche nach Selbstfindung durch und in der Kunst. Die Soloshow markiert eine neue kreative Phase, in der das Selbstporträt zu einem introspektiven Medium wird – ein stiller Dialog mit dem Spiegel, in dem die Künstlerin (oder die dargestellte weibliche Figur) versucht, sich selbst zu finden und neu zu definieren.

Die Werke spiegeln sowohl eine persönliche als auch eine kollektive Reise wider und untersuchen, wie Frauen ihre Rollen im Laufe der Zeit annehmen und verändern. Reife ist dabei nicht nur ein biologischer Prozess, sondern auch eine emotionale und soziale Entwicklung – eine Wiedergeburt, bei der Stereotypen abgelegt werden, um Platz für neue Dimensionen der Existenz zu schaffen. In der Malerei werden diese Momente der Selbstbeobachtung, der Verletzlichkeit und der Selbstermächtigung festgehalten und laden Betrachtende ein, über eigene Identität(en) und die zahlreichen Schichten, durch die weibliche Erfahrungen geformt werden, nachzudenken.

Im Kern porträtiert diese Serie daher nicht nur Gesichter, sondern auch Spuren der Zeit, inneres Hinterfragen und die stille Akzeptanz einer sich ständig weiterentwickelnden Weiblichkeit.

The artistic representation of a human being, which is usually limited to the head and chest area, seems more exciting today than ever with the variety of technical and artistic possibilities. But what is it that fascinates us so much about the image of a human being? We want to get closer to what contemporary portraiture is all about! The group exhibition „The New Portrait“ unites extraordinary contemporary artists who each proclaim their specific approach and aesthetic vision. From abstract positions to the figurative, from the colorful to the minimalist, GALLERY STƎPHAN STUMPF displays a wide variety of international artistic positions in order to – through their compilation –  give the portrait of today a face.

Die künstlerische Darstellung eines Menschen, die sich in der Regel auf den Kopf- und Brustbereich beschränkt, scheint heute durch die Vielfalt der technischen und künstlerischen Möglichkeiten spannender denn je. Doch was ist es, das uns am Bild des Menschen so sehr fasziniert? Wir wollen der zeitgenössischen Porträtmalerei auf den Grund gehen! Die Gruppenausstellung „Das neue Porträt“ vereint außergewöhnliche zeitgenössische Künstlerinnen und Künstler, die jeweils ihre spezifische Herangehensweise und ästhetische Vision proklamieren. The solo exhibition [ Commedia dell’Arte ] by Danielle van Zadelhoff runs until 16 August, 2025; Thursday to Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m. or by appointment.

Danielle van Zadelhoff’s solo exhibition „Commedia dell’Arte“ is dedicated to an artistic interpretation of this year’s thematic focus on mythology on the occasion of the cultural supporting program of the Inititive Münchner Galerien for the Munich Opera Festival 2025. Complex social phenomena that have been captured for centuries in historical myths about war and peace, jealousy and love, temptation or delusions of grandeur have found and continue to find expression in art, music and drama to this day.

In this context, the Amsterdam-born artist’s photographs transfer the Italian Commedia dell’Arte from around 1700 to the present day, thus creating a transcendental bridge to the human drama of the 21st century: Sad harlequins and mystical female figures emerge from intense contrasts of light and dark, reminiscent of the baroque design principle of chiaroscuro in oil painting, casting a metaphorical glance at the increasingly troubled world stage. With a focus on the past and future of humanity, viewers are invited to inscribe their own myths onto the protagonists in the paintings and to retell their stories.

Zadelhoff’s fascination with photography began as a child and was significantly influenced by her artistically inclined father. She learned in-depth techniques from the photographer Leopold Beels van Heemstede in Antwerp, Belgium, where she still lives and works today.

Die Einzelausstellung [ Commedia dell’Arte ] von Danielle van Zadelhoff läuft bis zum 16. August, 2025; donnerstags bis samstags von 15 bis 19 Uhr oder nach Vereinbarung.

Danielle van Zadelhoffs Soloausstellung „Commedia dell’Arte“ widmet sich, anlässlich des kulturellen Rahmenprogramms der Initiative Münchner Galerien zu den Opernfestspielen 2025, einer künstlerischen Interpretation des diesjährigen Themenschwerpunkts Mythologie. Vielschichtige soziale Phänomene, die in historischen Mythen über Krieg und Frieden, Eifersucht und Liebe, Versuchung oder Größenwahn seit Jahrhunderten festgehalten werden, fanden und finden bis heute Ausdruck in Kunst, Musik und Schauspiel.

Die Fotografien der in Amsterdam geborenen Künstlerin transferieren in diesem Kontext die italienische Commedia dell’Arte um 1700 in die Gegenwart und erschaffen so eine transzendentale Brücke zu dem (zwischen-)menschlichen Schauspiel des 21. Jahrhunderts: Traurige Harlekine und mystische Frauenfiguren schälen sich aus intensiven Hell-Dunkel-Kontraste, die an das barocke Gestaltungsprinzip des Chiaroscuro der Ölmalerei erinnern und werfen dabei einen metaphorisierenden Blick auf die zunehmend gebeutelte Weltbühne.

Mit Augenmerk auf die Vergangenheit und Zukunft der Menschheit sind Betrachtende dazu eingeladen, den innerbildlichen Protagonist:innen eigene Mythen einzuschreiben und deren Geschichte weiterzuerzählen.

Zadelhoffs Faszination für Fotografie begann bereits in der Kindheit und wurde maßgeblich durch ihren künstlerisch veranlagten Vater geprägt. Vertiefende Techniken lernte sie bei dem Fotografen Leopold Beels van Heemstede in Antwerpen, Belgien, wo sie bis heute lebt und arbeitet.

Abstrakte Werke stehen hier neben figürlichen Arbeiten, deren verschiedene Bild- und Stilsprachen mit den individuellen Lebensgeschichten und Werkaussagen der Künstler:innenpersönlichkeiten zu einem multiperspektivischen Gesamtkunstwerk verschwimmen.

THE SOUL OF THINGS

Ronit Baranga is a contemporary Israeli artist who lives and works in Israel. As a sculptor and installation artist, she creates figurative art on the border between living and still life, dealing with emotional states and connections. In her upcoming solo exhibition ‚The Soul of Things‘ at Gallery Stephan Stumpf, Baranga explores the subject-object relationship: If the hard cold body of the tea set becomes soft, flesh like and moldable; if the still vessels become doubtfully alive and respond to their surroundings with their own desires, the reality in which the taken-for-granted relationship between the useful object and the person using it, must be redefined.

Als Bildhauerin und Installationskünstlerin schafft sie figurative Kunst an der Grenze zwischen augenscheinlicher Lebendigkeit und klassischen Stillleben, die sich mit emotionalen Zuständen und zwischenmenschlichen Verbindungen auseinandersetzt. In ihrer kommenden Einzelausstellung „The Soul of Things“ in der Galerie Stephan Stumpf erforscht Baranga die Beziehung zwischen Subjekt und Objekt: Wenn der harte, kalte Körper eines Teeservices weich, fleischähnlich und formbar wird; wenn regungslose Gefäße fragwürdig lebendig erscheinen und mit eigenen Begehrlichkeiten auf ihre Umgebung reagieren, dann muss die Realität und Selbstverständlichkeit der Beziehung zwischen Gebrauchsgegenstand und dem Menschen, der ihn benutzt, neu definiert werden.

The Munich artist Annemarie Faupel, a master student of Karin Kneffel, combines both intimate and universal moments of human existence in her solo exhibition ‚Naked Truth‘. The close relationship between joie de vivre and transience, naturalness and artificiality as well as the artistic approach to socially controversial themes such as nudity or old age are create the centerpiece of her work.

Faupel’s unembellished nudes of her ninety-nine-year-old grandmother Elisabeth, for example, spare no wrinkle, no unevenness and no skin discoloration in order to tell a dignified portrait of the years and stories of a person’s life through precisely these physical inscription; to acknowledge the death of a spent and powerless body as part of life and to honour ageing in this way. In the shower rotunda of a Munich swimming pool, naked bodies also present themselves in a natural and quiet intimacy, in which all body forms coexist undisguised, creating a trusting space between strangers. The oscillating spectrum of emotions between the joie de vivre and the bittersweet idea of vanitas ultimately comes together in Faupel’s candy still lifes, whose shimmering candy wrappers or seductively shiny sugar glazes symbolize human cravings and addictions – a form of consumption that only provides temporary and short-term satisfaction, but does not nourish the body and soul in the long term.

Die Münchner Künstlerin Annemarie Faupel, Meisterschülerin von Karin Kneffel, vereint in ihrer Soloausstellung „NAKED TRUTH“ gleichsam intime wie universelle Momente des menschlichen Daseins. Das Näheverhältnis zwischen Lebenslust und Vergänglichkeit, Natürlichkeit und Artifizialität sowie der offene malerische Umgang mit gesellschaftlich kontroversen Themen, wie Nacktheit oder Alter stehen dabei im Vordergrund ihrer Arbeit.

So sparen die ungeschönten Aktbilder Faupels neunundneunzigjähriger Großmutter Elisabeth keine Falte, keine Unebenheit und keine Hautverfärbung aus, um durch eben jene körperlichen Einschreibungen ein würdevolles Portrait der Lebensjahre und Geschichten eines Menschen zu erzählen, den Tod eines verbrauchten, kraftlosen Körpers gleichsam als Teil des Lebens anzuerkennen und das Alter auf diese Weise zu ehren. Auch in der gemalten Rotunde eines Münchner Schwimmbads präsentieren sich nackte Körper in einer selbstverständlichen und stillen Intimität, in der alle Körperformen unverstellt nebeneinander koexistieren und dadurch einen vertrauensvollen Raum zwischen Fremden erschaffen. Das changierendes Emotionsspektrum zwischen dem Genuss des Lebens und des bittersüßen Vanitasgedanken vereint sich schlussendlich in Faupels Candy-Stillleben, deren schillernde Bonbonpapiere oder verführerisch glänzende Zuckerglasuren menschliche Gelüste und Süchte symbolisieren – eine Form des Konsums, der eine temporäre und kurzfristige Befriedigung bereitstellt, durch die Körper und Seele jedoch nicht langfristig genährt werden.

Doch was ist es, das uns so sehr am Abbild eines Menschen fasziniert? Wir wollen uns dem annähern, was das zeitgenössische Porträt ausmacht!

Die Ausstellung „The New Portrait“ vereint außergewöhnliche zeitgenössische Künstler, die jeweils ihre spezifische Herangehensweise und Ästhetik proklamieren. Von abstrakten Positionen zum Figurativen, vom Bunten bis hin zum Minimalistischen, inkludiert størpunkt eine breite Vielfalt internationaler künstlerischer Positionen, um in ihrer Zusammenstellung dem Portrait von heute ein Gesicht zu geben.

The Nude-since the renaissance, the nude has been a customary, mostly graphic work preparation in artist studios and academies for the precise reproduction of body proportions and muscle play. Initially reserved exclusively for religious, historical and mythological subjects, its role changed in the course of modern painting in the 19th century. Accordingly, the term expanded in meaning over time. Today it is used to describe any form of non-pornographic, artistic representation of an unclothed human body.

The Nude is a group exhibition that illuminates the nude from a contemporary perspective. Privacy, self-determination, sexualization, objectification, grace, emancipation, #MeToo, seduction, self-confidence, eroticism, artistic aesthetics – never before has nudity been discussed so vividly, finely differentiated and controversially in public discourse as it is today. Every contemporary representation of the nude refers – willingly or unwillingly – to all these discourses. More than ever, artists today use nude representation to explore the limits of what is morally and aesthetically permissible.

Der Akt -seit der Renaissance war der Akt eine in Künstlerateliers und Akademien übliche, meist zeichnerische Werkvorbereitung zur genauen Wiedergabe von Körperproportionen und dem Muskelspiel. Erstmal ausschließlich religiösen, historischen und mythologischen Sujets vorbehalten, veränderte sich seine Rolle im Zuge der modernen Malerei des 19. Jahrhunderts. Demnach erfuhr der Begriff im Laufe der Zeit eine Sinnerweiterung. Heute bezeichnet man damit jede Form der nicht-pornographischen, künstlerischen Darstellung eines unbekleideten menschlichen Körpers.

THE NUDE ist eine Gemeinschaftsausstellung, die den Akt aus zeitgenössischer Perspektive beleuchtet. Intimsphäre, Selbstbestimmung, Sexualisierung, Objektifizierung, Anmut, Emanzipation, #MeToo, Verführung, Erotik, künstlerische Ästhetik – noch nie wurde Nacktheit im öffentlichen Diskurs so spannend, fein-differenziert und kontrovers diskutiert wie heute. Jede zeitgenössische Aktdarstellung rekurriert – willentlich oder unwillentlich – auf all diese Diskurse. Mehr denn je, loten Künstler heute mithilfe der Aktdarstellung die Grenzen des moralisch und ästhetisch Erlaubten aus.

In our annual exhibition series HALF A POUND OF ART we unite strong positions of international artists who have something innovative to offer the art world. The exhibited works are exclusively small format with a maximum size of 50 x 50 cm. The exhibition does not follow a thematic curation, crucial factors are the size and excellence of the works. The medium is kept open and offers space for painting and sculpture, as well as for photography, installations, conceptual or video art.  On display are outstanding works that challenge our viewing habits, works that awaken in us a love of detail and, above all, are characterized by technical sophistication.  This exhibition is conceived as an homage to the small format – a sometimes underestimated but highly exciting format in which a maximum of technical expertise and creative refinement accumulates.

In unserer jährlichen Ausstellungsreihe HALF A POUND OF ART vereinen wir starke Positionen internationaler Künstler, die der Kunstwelt Innovatives zu bieten haben. Die ausgestellten Werke sind ausschließlich kleinformatig mit einer maximalen Größe von 50 x 50 cm. Das Medium wird dabei offen gehalten und bietet Raum für Malerei und Skulptur, ebenso wie für Fotografie, Installationen, Konzept- oder Videokunst. Gezeigt werden herausragende Arbeiten, die unsere Sehgewohnheiten herausfordern – Werke, die in uns die Liebe zum Detail wecken und sich vor allem durch technische Raffinesse auszeichnen. Diese Ausstellung ist als Hommage and das Kleinformat konzipiert – ein bisweilen unterschätztes aber höchst spannendes Format, in welchem sich ein Höchstmaß an technischer Versiertheit und kreativer Raffinesse akkumuliert.

BOUND 

In her latest photographs Daniëlle van Zadelhoff explores the vulnerability, insecurity and loneliness of the human being. Emotional conditions, which in times of a global pandemic are more actual than ever before. The exhibition BOUND expresses the basic need to connect with others, but also reveals the challenges that come along with being tied to someone. 

Inspired by Old Masters of Dutch painting such as Rembrandt and Vermeer, Daniëlle van Zadelhoff‘s works show the attempt to translate the formal principles of sixteenth and seventeenth century painting into art photography. Thus, the intense light-dark contrasts created by the selective illumination of the sitter against a dark background are reminiscent of the Baroque design principle of chiaroscuro. Light and shadow swirl around the body, emphasizing muscles, tendons, and bone structures and lend the figures a sense of pronounced plasticity. In the process, she attaches a great deal of artistic attention to ensuring that the almost immaculate skin of her models appears like a smooth surface referring to the painterly usage of the so called blaireau brush. The light comes from a single source outside the frame, creating a theatrical and sometimes sacred atmosphere. 

At once simple and yet surprisingly complex, Daniëlle‘s portraits convey her fascination with the human psyche, using models to interpret innate questions of temptation, vulnerability, doubt and faith as a pretext for self-exploration. However, the works’ titles reveal that the sitters are not of interest to the artist as individual personalities, but rather as projection surfaces of types and personifications.

In ihren neuesten Fotografien erkundet Daniëlle van Zadelhoff die Verletzlichkeit, Unsicherheit und Einsamkeit des Menschen sowie emotionale Zustände, die in Zeiten einer globalen Pandemie aktueller sind als je zuvor. Die Ausstellung BOUND bringt das Grundbedürfnis zum Ausdruck, sich mit anderen zu verbinden, zeigt aber auch die Herausforderungen, die mit der Bindung an einen Menschen einhergehen.

Inspiriert von alten Meistern der niederländischen Malerei wie Rembrandt und Vermeer, zeigen Daniëlle van Zadelhoffs Arbeiten den Versuch, die formalen Prinzipien der Malerei des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts in die Kunstfotografie zu übertragen. So erinnern die intensiven Hell-Dunkel-Kontraste, die durch die gezielte Ausleuchtung des Dargestellten vor dunklem Hintergrund entstehen, an das barocke Gestaltungsprinzip des Hell-Dunkel. Licht und Schatten umspielen den Körper, betonen Muskeln, Sehnen und Knochenstrukturen und verleihen den Figuren eine ausgeprägte Plastizität. Dabei legt sie großen künstlerischen Wert darauf, dass die fast makellose Haut ihrer Modelle wie eine glatte Oberfläche erscheint, die auf die malerische Verwendung des so genannten Blaireau-Pinsels verweist. Das Licht kommt von einer einzigen Quelle außerhalb des Rahmens und schafft eine theatralische und manchmal sakrale Atmosphäre.

Die Porträts von Daniëlle sind einfach und doch überraschend komplex. Sie zeigen ihre Faszination für die menschliche Psyche, indem sie Modelle verwendet, um Fragender Versuchung, der Verletzlichkeit, des Zweifels und des Glaubens als Ausgangspunkt für die Erkundung des Selbst heranzuziehen. Die Titel der Arbeiten verraten jedoch, dass die Porträtierten für die Künstlerin nicht als individuelle Persönlichkeiten von Interesse sind, sondern als Projektionsflächen von Typisierungen und Personifikationen.

THE PUPPET THEATER

Ronit Baranga’s ceramic sculptures are hauntingly lifelike and frisky. There is always a dichotomy to her work and an element of the unexpected. Inbuilt contradictions, sometimes playful, sometimes threatening, that surprise, shock or unsettle the viewer. Based on her series The Grave Watchers’ Childhood, that was influenced by two ancient figures – „Tomb Guardians“ from the Tang Dynasty (618-906 A.D.) – Baranga’s new work continues the examination of baby sweetness and innocence in contradistinction to a wild and uncontrollable side inherent in children.

For this purpose, the artist uses the motif of the putto, a naked angelic child figure, that is present in sculpture and painting since antiquity and transforms it as an antithesis in a cute demon with horns, fangs and claws. Originally embodying love, innocence and beauty, the childishness in Baranga’s works represents challenging emotions such as anger, frustration, desire and recalcitrance. On the one hand, several of her demon sculptures are forming a threatening and dynamic unit by responding to their environment and interacting with each other. On the other hand, they are meticulously placed around realistic looking human beings like inanimate glove puppets. This divergent approach raises questions about role playing, subconsciousness and the power of emotions: Are the little devils personifications of uncontrollable feelings? And if so, do they prevail or are they merely puppets who only come to life whenever the infantile player wants to?

Die Keramikskulpturen von Ronit Baranga sind eindringlich, lebensecht und verspielt. Ihre Arbeiten sind stets zwiespältig und enthalten ein Element des Unerwarteten. Eingebaute Widersprüche, manchmal spielerisch, manchmal bedrohlich, überraschen, schockieren oder verunsichern die Betrachtenden. Ausgehend von ihrer Serie „The Grave Watchers‘ Childhood“, die von zwei antiken Figuren – „Grabwächtern“ aus der Tang-Dynastie (618-906 n. Chr.) -beeinflusst wurde, setzt Baranga in ihrem neuen Werk die Untersuchung der kindlichen Lieblichkeit und Unschuld fort, die im Gegensatz zu deren wilder und unkontrollierbaren Seite steht.

Dazu verwendet die Künstlerin das Motiv des Putto, einer nackten, engelhaften Kinderfigur, die seit der Antike in Skulptur und Malerei präsent ist und verwandelt diese als Gegenpol in einen infantilen Dämon mit Hörnern, Reißzähnen und Krallen. Ursprünglich verkörperte das Kindliche in Barangas Werken Liebe, Unschuld und Schönheit, heute steht es für herausfordernde Emotionen wie Wut, Frustration, Verlangen und Widerspenstigkeit. Einerseits bilden mehrere ihrer Dämonenskulpturen eine bedrohliche und dynamische Einheit, indem sie auf ihre Umgebung reagieren und miteinander interagieren. Andererseits sind sie akribisch um realistisch aussehende Menschen herum platziert, die wie leblose Handpuppen wirken. Diese unterschiedliche Herangehensweise wirft Fragen über Rollenspiele, Unterbewusstsein und die Macht der Gefühle auf: Sind die kleinen Teufelchen Personifikationen unkontrollierbarer Gefühle? Und wenn ja, setzen sie sich durch oder sind sie lediglich Marionetten, die nur dann zum Leben erwachen, wenn kindliche Spielende es wollen?
