SHEILA FLAHERTY

Sheila Flaherty is an Irish figurative artist whose hyperrealist oil paintings explore themes of identity, societal expectations, and psychological resilience. Based in Dublin, her work has gained international recognition and is held in private collections across Europe and North America.

She recently won First Prize at The Power of She exhibition at Summer & Grace Gallery in Ontario, receiving first place at the 2025 Cindy Cottrell Art Prize. Sheila is also the recipient of the Promotion Award from the 2025 TARtget Art Prize, where her painting Heart’s Desire was exhibited at the historic Ateneo de Madrid. Sheila was awarded an Honourable Mention in the 2025 FiKVA International Painting Prize and was a finalist in the 2024 edition of the same award. In 2026, she will take part in a two-person exhibition at Summer & Grace Gallery and has been awarded a residency with the Almenara Art Collection in southern Spain. Her solo show with Galerie Stephan Stumpf will open during Gallery Weekend Munich 2026.

NAE ZERKA

Nae Zerka, lives and works in Salzburg, Austria. In the age of frequent digital disruption, the visual artist showcases in his work the promising possibilities of the interplay between painting and technology. As a child of the 80s, Zerka has a penchant for computerrelated activities, including electronic music and graphic design. His artistic practices infuses visual elements borrowed from these disciplines with traditional colours such as oil and pastel.

This multimedia exploration of transformative processes is not only to be understood on a symbolic level, but is at its core a profound artistic examination of fundamental change: Transformation, as a seismic movement in the political, economic or technological landscape, unleashes forces that are shaping our present in unprecedented ways. For Zerka, however, such a transformation does not take place immediately, but is the expression of an ongoing, non-linear process of adaptation. In recent discourse, the concept of human transformation is often associated with the ongoing process of global digitalization. The growing presence of an artificially constructed and digital world raises critical questions that encompass all facets of human life, from social structures to cultural norms. Symbolized by head coverings, bandages or layering in the faces of Nae Zerka’s portrait subjects, reference is made to these social veils, masks and the ablative search for a person’s supposedly ‚true self‘.

Im Zeitalter des digitalen Umbruchs zeigt der bildende Künstler in seinen Arbeiten die vielversprechenden Möglichkeiten des Zusammenspiels von Malerei und Technologie auf. Als Kind der 80er Jahre hat Zerka eine Vorliebe für computerbezogene Aktivitäten, einschließlich elektronischer Musik und Grafikdesign. In seiner künstlerischen Praxis verbindet er visuelle Elemente aus diesen Disziplinen mit traditionellen Farben wie Öl und Pastell.

Diese multimediale Erforschung von transformativen Prozessen ist nicht nur auf symbolischer Ebene zu verstehen, sondern bildet im Kern eine tiefgreifende künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit grundlegenden Veränderungen: Transformation, als eine seismische Bewegung in der politischen, wirtschaftlichen oder technologischen Landschaft, setzt Kräfte frei, die unsere Gegenwart in noch nie da gewesener Weise prägen. Für Zerka vollzieht sich eine derartige Transformation allerdings nicht sofort, sondern ist Ausdruck eines fortlaufenden, nichtlinearen Anpassungsprozesses. Im jüngsten Diskurs wird das Konzept der menschlichen Transformation häufig mit dem fortschreitenden Prozess der globalen Digitalisierung in Verbindung gebracht. Die wachsende Präsenz einer künstlich konstruierten und digitalen Welt wirft kritische Fragen auf, die – von sozialen Strukturen bis hin zu kulturellen Normen – alle Facetten des menschlichen Lebens umfassen. Symbolisiert durch Kopfbedeckungen, Bandagen oder Schichtungen in den Gesichtern von Nae Zerkas Portraitierten wird auf diese gesellschaftlichen Verschleierungen, Maskierungen und die abtragende Suche nach dem vermeintlich ‚wahrhaftigen Selbst‘ einer Person verwiesen.

SUSANNAH MARTIN

Susannah Martin was born in New York City in 1964.  She studied Fine Art at New York University and received a SEHNAP scholarship for painting. Among her most notable teachers there were; John Kacere, Louise Lawler, Sherrie Levine and Peter Campus.  Following her studies she completed numerous large scale public and private mural projects as well as sets for film in New York, Berlin and Frankfurt am Main where she currently lives and works. 

In 2004 she returned to oil painting.  Over the last several years, her work has focused exclusively on contemporizing the classical subject of the nude in landscape. Avoiding a falsely idyllic scenario, her work focuses on mans´ estrangement from nature.  Martins´ work creates a stage in which mans´ struggle between the two poles of his identity, the natural and the synthetic, may be contemplated. Her work is exhibited internationally throughout Europe and the United States of America.

Susannah Martin wurde 1964 in New York City geboren. Sie studierte Bildende Kunst an der New York University und erhielt ein SEHNAP-Stipendium für Malerei. Nach ihrem Studium realisierte sie zahlreiche groß angelegte öffentliche und private Wandprojekte sowie Filmkulissen in New York, Berlin und Frankfurt am Main, wo sie heute lebt und arbeitet.

Im Jahr 2004 kehrte sie zur Ölmalerei zurück. In den letzten Jahren konzentrierte sich ihre Arbeit ausschließlich auf die zeitgenössische Darstellung des klassischen Aktes in der Landschaft. Unter Vermeidung einer falschen Idylle thematisiert sie die Entfremdung des Menschen von der Natur. Martins‘ Werk schafft eine Bühne, auf der der Kampf des Menschen zwischen den beiden Polen seiner Identität, dem Natürlichen und dem Synthetischen, betrachtet werden kann. Ihre Werke werden international in ganz Europa und den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika ausgestellt.

RONIT BARANGA

Ronit Baranga is a contemporary Israeli artist who lives and works in Israel.

As a sculptor and installation artist, she creates figurative art on the border between living and still life, dealing with emotional states and relationships.
Her work has been displayed in museums and galleries around the world and is a part of many museum and private collections. Key exhibitions include Banksy’s group exhibition „Dismaland“ and numerous solo and group exhibitions in New York, Istanbul, Taiwan, China, Germany, Tel-Aviv and Australia.
Baranga holds a B.A. in Psychology and Literature from Haifa University, studied Art History in Tel-Aviv University, and Fine Arts in Beit Berl College (‚HaMidrasha‘), Israel.

Ihre Arbeiten wurden in Museen und Galerien auf der ganzen Welt ausgestellt und sind Teil vieler Museums- und Privatsammlungen. Zu den wichtigsten Ausstellungen gehört Banksys Gruppenausstellung „Dismaland“ sowie zahlreiche Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen in New York, Istanbul, Taiwan, China, Deutschland, Tel Aviv und Australien. Joanna Grochowska is a contemporary artist exploring transhumanism and human enhancement technologies. Her work contributes to the dialogue about transhumanism, morphological freedom and the future. The conceptual basis of her art are the notions of Transgression and Singularity.

Grochowska’s work has been exhibited internationally including Munich, Paris, New York, and London. Her art has frequented galleries and museums alike.

ANTON HÖGER

Anton Franz Hoeger, born 1956 in Munich, is now living near Dallas, TX together with his wife and muse. His artistic roots go back to the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism. A master student of Prof. Ernst Fuchs taught him. He was never interested in the „uniform“ painting at the art academies. He always wanted to do something different. His breakthrough came with his solo exhibition at the Museum Meštrović-Pavillon Zagreb 2017 (HDLU), and the honorary prize for one of the most successful and best exhibition.

Seine künstlerischen Wurzeln gehen auf die Wiener Schule des Phantastischen Realismus zurück. DANIËLLE VAN ZADELHOFF

Inspired by Old Masters of Dutch painting such as Rembrandt and Vermeer, Daniëlle van Zadelhoff‘s works show the attempt to translate the formal principles of sixteenth and seventeenth century painting into art photography. Thus, the intense light-dark contrasts created by the selective illumination of the sitter against a dark background are reminiscent of the Baroque design principle of chiaroscuro. Light and shadow swirl around the body, emphasizing muscles, tendons, and bone structures and lend the figures a sense of pronounced plasticity. In the process, she attaches a great deal of artistic attention to ensuring that the almost immaculate skin of her models appears like a smooth surface referring to the painterly usage of the so called blaireau brush. The light comes from a single source outside the frame, creating a theatrical and sometimes sacred atmosphere.

Inspiriert von alten Meistern der niederländischen Malerei wie Rembrandt und Vermeer, zeigen Daniëlle van Zadelhoffs Arbeiten den Versuch, die formalen Prinzipien der Malerei des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts in die Kunstfotografie zu übertragen. So erinnern die intensiven Hell-Dunkel-Kontraste, die durch die gezielte Ausleuchtung des Dargestellten vor dunklem Hintergrund entstehen, an das barocke Gestaltungsprinzip des Chiaroscuro. Licht und Schatten umspielen den Körper, betonen Muskeln, Sehnen und Knochenstrukturen und verleihen den Figuren eine ausgeprägte Plastizität. Dabei legt sie großen künstlerischen Wert darauf, dass die fast makellose Haut ihrer Modelle wie eine glatte Oberfläche erscheint, die auf die malerische Verwendung des so genannten Blaireau-Pinsels verweist. Das Licht kommt von einer einzigen Quelle außerhalb des Rahmens und schafft eine theatralische und manchmal sakrale Atmosphäre.

FRANK KRÜGER

Frank Krüger currently lives in Munich, Germany. He is a self-taught artist who works primarily in oil paints. In his small-format artworks he depicts the human, mostly female figure. The basis for his paintings is formed by photographs, from which he takes cut-outs to translate them into his artistic style. His style is characterized by a strong blur, while the motifs only become clearly visible by walking further away.

Frank Krüger lebt derzeit in München, Deutschland. Er ist Autodidakt und arbeitet hauptsächlich mit Ölfarben. In seinen kleinformatigen Kunstwerken stellt er die menschliche, meist weibliche Figur dar. Die Grundlage für seine Bilder bilden Fotografien, aus denen er Ausschnitte entnimmt, um sie in seinen künstlerischen Stil zu übertragen. Sein Stil zeichnet sich durch starke Unschärfe aus, wodurch die Motive erst aus größerer Entfernung deutlich erkennbar werden.

YOLANDA DORDA

Born in Barcelona, Yolanda Dorda grew up in A Coruña. She has always been linked, in one way or another, to art, which led her to begin her artistic studies at the Pablo Picasso School of Art, opting for sculpture as a specialization. It was in London that painting became her main means of expression. It was there that she came into contact with English painters and expressionism, and their influence was clear in her works. In her canvases you can appreciate a certain cosmopolitanism that comes from her English experience, but also from her time in New York, Barcelona and Slovenia, connecting with the artistic environment of these cities. Since its inception, in addition to her artistic residencies, Dorda has participated in numerous meetings of artists, being selected for workshops organized by the MACUF, and also by the CIEC Foundation. Furthermore, she has won numerous awards in many art competitions, and her work can be found in some important collections and institutions. During the last decade her works have been part of publications and individual and collective exhibitions all over the country. The expressive force of her brushstrokes, her digital collages and the sexual and feminine themes of her work, make her one of the most recognized artists on a national level. She has been featured in the latest editions of Art Madrid, in the contest Mujeres Mirando Mujeres,and since 2018 she has collaborated monthly with the German edition of the prestigious magazine Vogue with paintings in which female sexuality is exhibited without taboos.

Yolanda Dorda wurde in Barcelona geboren und wuchs in A Coruña auf. Sie war schon immer auf die eine oder andere Weise mit der Kunst verbunden, was sie dazu veranlasste, ihr Kunststudium an der Pablo Picasso School of Art zu beginnen, wobei sie sich für die Bildhauerei als Spezialisierung entschied. In London wurde die Malerei zu ihrem wichtigsten Ausdrucksmittel. Dort kam sie in Kontakt mit englischen Malern und dem Expressionismus, deren Einfluss in ihren Werken deutlich zu spüren ist. In ihren Gemälden spiegelt sich eine gewisse Weltoffenheit wider, die durch ihre Erfahrungen in England, aber auch der Zeit in New York, Barcelona und Slowenien begründet ist, als sie in das künstlerische Umfeld dieser Städte eintauchte. Seit ihren Anfängen hat Dorda neben ihren künstlerischen Residenzen an zahlreichen Künstlertreffen teilgenommen und wurde für Workshops ausgewählt, die von der MACUF und der CIEC-Stiftung organisiert wurden. Darüber hinaus hat sie zahlreiche Preise diverser Kunstwettbewerbe gewonnen. So sind auch ihre Werke in einigen wichtigen Sammlungen und Institutionen zu finden. In den letzten zehn Jahren waren ihre Arbeiten Teil von Publikationen sowie Einzel- und Gemeinschaftsausstellungen im ganzen Land. Die Ausdruckskraft ihrer Pinselstriche, ihre digitalen Collagen und die sexuellen und weiblichen Themen machen sie zu einer der anerkanntesten Künstlerinnen auf nationaler Ebene. Sie war in den letzten Ausgaben der Art Madrid und im Wettbewerb Mujeres Mirando Mujeres vertreten und arbeitet seit 2018 monatlich mit der deutschen Ausgabe der renommierten Zeitschrift Vogue zusammen, für die sie Bilder malt, in denen die weibliche Sexualität ohne Tabus gezeigt wird.

STEFAN ZSAITSITS

The Austrian artist Stefan Zsaitsits currently lives and works in a small village near Vienna. After finishing his Diploma at the University of applied Arts Vienna in 2006, he has won several accolades, such as the Art Austria Award in 2014. Due to his brilliant pencil skills, he has created a distinctive pictorial language, which exemplifies him as a young aspiring artist.

Sketching symptomatical trains of thought, requires an artistic form of expression, which can cope with the spontaneity, emotionality and fugacity of thinking. The pencil works of Stefan Zsaitsits take the spectator on a journey into the soul of his protagonists. This guides him from gentle plains of innocence, deep into gestural and expressive abysses of the human psyche, where demons of a multifaceted self are hiding. Moreover, these subconscious depths will be turned inside out and will be projected on the external, visible surface of his strange figures and are thereby shown to the public sphere. The artworks of the austrian artist access an echo of the surrealistic repertoire of forms and lead to a visualization of inherent fears, which populate the unconscious and rule the roost by means of dreams and thoughts. The pencil allows him therefore to be bulky, gestural, emotive, filigree or to be a stickler for details.

Der österreichische Künstler Stefan Zsaitsits lebt und arbeitet derzeit in einem kleinen Dorf in der Nähe von Wien. Nach Abschluss seines Diploms an der Universität für angewandte Kunst Wien im Jahr 2006 wurde er mehrfach ausgezeichnet, unter anderem mit dem Art Austria Award 2014. Durch seine brillante Bleistiftfertigkeit hat er eine unverwechselbare Bildsprache geschaffen, die ihn als jungen aufstrebenden Künstler auszeichnet.

Das Skizzieren von symptomatischen Gedankengängen erfordert eine künstlerische Ausdrucksform, die aus der Spontaneität, Emotionalität und Flüchtigkeit des Denkens gewachsen ist. Die Bleistiftarbeiten von Zsaitsits nehmen den Betrachter mit auf eine Reise in die Seele seiner Protagonist:innen. Diese führen von sanften Ebenen der Unschuld bis tief in die gestischen und expressiven Abgründe der menschlichen Psyche, wo sich die Dämonen eines vielschichtigen Ichs verbergen. Mehr noch, diese unbewussten Tiefen werden von innen nach außen gekehrt und auf die äußere, sichtbare Oberfläche seiner seltsamen Figuren projiziert und damit der Öffentlichkeit vorgeführt. Die Arbeiten des österreichischen Künstlers greifen auf ein Echo des surrealistischen Formenrepertoires zurück und führen zu einer Visualisierung von innewohnenden Ängsten, die das Unbewusste bevölkern und mittels Träumen und Gedanken die Herrschaft antreten. Der Bleistift erlaubt ihm dabei, sperrig, gestisch, gefühlvoll, filigran oder detailverliebt zu sein.

„Was die bildende Kunst betrifft, so glaube ich, dass die Zeichnung den menschlichen Gedanken am nächsten ist. In meinen Werken versuche ich, die lebenswichtigen Fragen zu erleichtern, ohne die täglichen Probleme der Menschen zu vernachlässigen. Vom großen Bild zum kleinen und umgekehrt. ANNEMARIE FAUPEL

Annemarie Faupel, a graduate master student of Karin Kneffel at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, captures people and objects with an extraordinary eye for detail and surface textures in her wide-ranging oeuvre. In Faupel’s large and medium-format paintings, sugary, shiny dounut glazes, iridescent candy wrappers and naked bodies covered in water, shower foam or deep wrinkles merge into close depictions of haptic and visual sensory perceptions. Her open-hearted artistic approach of socially controversial themes such as nudity, sexuality or depictions of old age, based on individual life stories and snapshots, opens up a representational surface in which universal human sensations are reflected. The close relationship between pleasure and pain, attraction and rejection, naturalness and artificiality as well as lightness and heaviness forms an overarching emotional spectrum that runs through Faupel’s nudes and still lifes.

The artist’s works have already been presented in various German galleries and exhibition venues, including the Pinaktothek der Moderne in Munich.

In Faupels groß- und mittelformatigen Malerein verschmelzen zuckrig glänzende Dounutglasuren, schillernd leuchtende Bonbonpapiere und von Wasser, Duschschaum oder tiefen Falten überzogene, nackte Körper zu nahbaren Abbildern haptischer und visueller Sinneswahrnehmungen. Der offenherzige malerische Umgang mit gesellschaftlich kontroversen Themen, wie Nacktheit, Sexualität oder Altersdarstellungen spannt, anhand einzelner Lebensgeschichten und Momentaufnahmen, eine künstlerische Repräsentationsfläche auf, in der sich universelle menschliche Empfindungswelten spiegeln. Das Näheverhältnis zwischen Lust und Schmerz, Anziehung und Ablehnung, Natürlichkeit und Artifizialität sowie Leichtigkeit und Schwere bildet ein übergeordnetes Emotionsspektrum, das Faupels Akte und Stillleben durchzieht.

Arbeiten der Künstlerin wurden bereits in diversen deutschen Galerien und Ausstellungshäusern präsentiert, unter anderem in der Pinaktothek der Moderne München.

TONINO MATTU

Tonino Mattu born in Nuoro, Sardinia he currently lives and works in Oristano, Sardinia.

Self-taught, he has built his art styding the ancient treatises of painting. His research is focused on relationships between reality and image mystification. He tries to make seem real the subject that he paints, but he does’nt paint real things. He utilizes an ecletic image, in wich coexist figurative and abstract elements. In this way the image can be filtered and made subjective for diverse interpretations.

Tonino Mattu, geboren in Nuoro, Sardinien, lebt und arbeitet derzeit in Oristano, Sardinien.

Er ist Autodidakt und hat seine Kunst in Anlehnung an die alten Abhandlungen über die Malerei aufgebaut. Seine Forschung konzentriert sich auf die Beziehungen zwischen Realität und Bildmystifizierung. Er versucht, den Gegenstand, den er malt, real erscheinen zu lassen, malt jedoch keine realen Dinge. Er verwendet ein ekletisches Bild, in dem figurative und abstrakte Elemente koexistieren. Auf diese Weise kann das Bild gefiltert und für verschiedene Interpretationen subjektiviert werden.

TIINA HEISKA

Tiina Heiska lives and works in Helsinki. She has exhibited in several group and solo exhibitions in Finland and abroad. Heiska’s work is represented in a number of Finnish art and museum collections, such as Sara Hildén Art Museum, EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art, Amos Anderson Art Museum, HAM Helsinki City Art Museum and Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation’s Collection.

Heiska’s paintings are based on photography and cinematography. The images she uses as a draft for her paintings can be stills from films or photos taken by herself. Heiska shamelessly seduces a viewer. By using female accessories and dressing-up Heiska plays with identity, sexuality, desire, age and gender.

We are a Munich gallery for contemporary art and are currently planning our annual group exhibition HALF A POUND OF ART.  Since we like to offer a colorful potpourri of works, we are regularly looking for new artists who would like to participate in a group exhibition together with long-standing artists of the gallery. The DEADLINE is 31 December, 2025.

In our annual exhibition series HALF A POUND OF ART we unite strong positions of international artists who have something innovative to offer the art world. The exhibited works are exclusively small format with a maximum size of 50 x 50 cm. The exhibition does not follow a thematic curation, crucial factors are the size and excellence of the works. The medium is kept open and offers space for painting and sculpture, as well as for photography, installations, conceptual or video art. On display are outstanding works that challenge our viewing habits, works that awaken in us a love of detail and, above all, are characterized by technical sophistication. This exhibition is conceived as an homage to the small format – a sometimes underestimated but highly exciting format in which a maximum of technical expertise and creative refinement accumulates.

The exhibition will be on display from 22 January to 14 March, 2026, during our regular opening hours (Thursday – Saturday, 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm).  A vernissage is scheduled for Thursday, 22 January, 7-10 p.m.

Nachfolgend das Ausstellungskonzept:
In unserer jährlichen Ausstellungsreihe HALF A POUND OF ART vereinen wir starke Positionen internationaler Künstler, die der Kunstwelt Innovatives zu bieten haben. Die ausgestellten Werke sind ausschließlich kleinformatig mit einer maximalen Größe von 50 x 50 cm. Das Medium wird dabei offen gehalten und bietet Raum für Malerei und Skulptur, ebenso wie für Fotografie, Installationen, Konzept- oder Videokunst. Gezeigt werden herausragende Arbeiten, die unsere Sehgewohnheiten herausfordern – Werke, die in uns die Liebe zum Detail wecken und sich vor allem durch technische Raffinesse auszeichnen. Diese Ausstellung ist als Hommage and das Kleinformat konzipiert – ein bisweilen unterschätztes aber höchst spannendes Format, in welchem sich ein Höchstmaß an technischer Versiertheit und kreativer Raffinesse akkummuliert.

Die Ausstellung wird vom 22 Januar bis 14 März, 2026 in den Räumlichkeiten der Galerie zu unseren regulären Öffnungszeiten (Donnerstag – Samstag, 15:00 bis 19:00 Uhr) zu sehen sein. Eine Vernissage ist für Donnerstag, den 22 Januar, 19:00 bis 22:00 Uhr geplant.

The solo exhibition [ FRAGMENTED IDENTITY ] by Yolanda Dorda runs until December 20, 2025, Thurs-Sat 3-7 pm or by appointment

Within the exhibition „Fragmented Identity“ the Spanish artist Yolanda Dorda explores themes of womanhood, femininity, and the ongoing quest for self-discovery through art. The solo show marks a new creative phase in which self-portraiture becomes an introspective medium—a silent dialogue with the mirror, where the artist (or the depicted female figure) seeks to find and redefine herself.

The works reflect both a personal and collective journey, examining how women embrace and transform their roles over time. Maturity is not merely a biological process but an emotional and social evolution—a rebirth in which stereotypes are shed to make way for new dimensions of existence. Through painting, these moments of introspection, vulnerability, and empowerment are captured, inviting the viewer to reflect on their own identity and the many layers that shape the feminine experience.

Die Einzelausstellung [ FRAGMENTED IDENTITY ] von Yolanda Dorda läuft bis zum 20. Dezember 2025, immer donnerstags bis samstags von 15 bis 19 Uhr oder nach Vereinbarung.

Mit der Ausstellung „Fragmented Identity“ erkundet die spanische Künstlerin Yolanda Dorda Themen wie Frausein, Weiblichkeit und die andauernde Suche nach Selbstfindung durch und in der Kunst. Die Soloshow markiert eine neue kreative Phase, in der das Selbstporträt zu einem introspektiven Medium wird – ein stiller Dialog mit dem Spiegel, in dem die Künstlerin (oder die dargestellte weibliche Figur) versucht, sich selbst zu finden und neu zu definieren.

Die Werke spiegeln sowohl eine persönliche als auch eine kollektive Reise wider und untersuchen, wie Frauen ihre Rollen im Laufe der Zeit annehmen und verändern. Reife ist dabei nicht nur ein biologischer Prozess, sondern auch eine emotionale und soziale Entwicklung – eine Wiedergeburt, bei der Stereotypen abgelegt werden, um Platz für neue Dimensionen der Existenz zu schaffen. In der Malerei werden diese Momente der Selbstbeobachtung, der Verletzlichkeit und der Selbstermächtigung festgehalten und laden Betrachtende ein, über eigene Identität(en) und die zahlreichen Schichten, durch die weibliche Erfahrungen geformt werden, nachzudenken.

Im Kern porträtiert diese Serie daher nicht nur Gesichter, sondern auch Spuren der Zeit, inneres Hinterfragen und die stille Akzeptanz einer sich ständig weiterentwickelnden Weiblichkeit.

The group exhibition [ THE NEW PORTRAIT ] runs until 25 October 2025, Thurs-Sat 3-7 pm or by appointment.

What characterizes today’s portrait? The portrait is one of the most classic and well known genres in the history of art. The artistic representation of a human being, which is usually limited to the head and chest area, seems more exciting today than ever with the variety of technical and artistic possibilities. But what is it that fascinates us so much about the image of a human being? We want to get closer to what contemporary portraiture is all about! The group exhibition „The New Portrait“ unites extraordinary contemporary artists who each proclaim their specific approach and aesthetic vision. From abstract positions to the figurative, from the colorful to the minimalist, GALLERY STƎPHAN STUMPF displays a wide variety of international artistic positions in order to – through their compilation –  give the portrait of today a face.

Was kennzeichnet das Porträt von heute? Das Porträt ist eine der klassischsten und bekanntesten Gattungen der Kunstgeschichte. Die künstlerische Darstellung eines Menschen, die sich in der Regel auf den Kopf- und Brustbereich beschränkt, scheint heute durch die Vielfalt der technischen und künstlerischen Möglichkeiten spannender denn je. Doch was ist es, das uns am Bild des Menschen so sehr fasziniert? Wir wollen der zeitgenössischen Porträtmalerei auf den Grund gehen! Die Gruppenausstellung „Das neue Porträt“ vereint außergewöhnliche zeitgenössische Künstlerinnen und Künstler, die jeweils ihre spezifische Herangehensweise und ästhetische Vision proklamieren. Von abstrakten bis hin zu figurativen, von farbenfrohen bis hin zu minimalistischen Positionen zeigt die GALLERY STƎPHAN STUMPF eine große Vielfalt internationaler künstlerischer Positionen, um durch ihre Zusammenstellung dem Porträt von heute ein Gesicht zu geben.

DANIELLE VAN ZADELHOFF [solo]

The solo exhibition [ Commedia dell’Arte ] by Danielle van Zadelhoff runs until 16 August, 2025; Thursday to Saturday from 3 to 7 p.m. or by appointment.

Danielle van Zadelhoff’s solo exhibition „Commedia dell’Arte“ is dedicated to an artistic interpretation of this year’s thematic focus on mythology on the occasion of the cultural supporting program of the Inititive Münchner Galerien for the Munich Opera Festival 2025. Complex social phenomena that have been captured for centuries in historical myths about war and peace, jealousy and love, temptation or delusions of grandeur have found and continue to find expression in art, music and drama to this day.

In this context, the Amsterdam-born artist’s photographs transfer the Italian Commedia dell’Arte from around 1700 to the present day, thus creating a transcendental bridge to the human drama of the 21st century: Sad harlequins and mystical female figures emerge from intense contrasts of light and dark, reminiscent of the baroque design principle of chiaroscuro in oil painting, casting a metaphorical glance at the increasingly troubled world stage. With a focus on the past and future of humanity, viewers are invited to inscribe their own myths onto the protagonists in the paintings and to retell their stories.

Zadelhoff’s fascination with photography began as a child and was significantly influenced by her artistically inclined father. She learned in-depth techniques from the photographer Leopold Beels van Heemstede in Antwerp, Belgium, where she still lives and works today.

Danielle van Zadelhoffs Soloausstellung „Commedia dell’Arte“ widmet sich, anlässlich des kulturellen Rahmenprogramms der Initiative Münchner Galerien zu den Opernfestspielen 2025, einer künstlerischen Interpretation des diesjährigen Themenschwerpunkts Mythologie. Vielschichtige soziale Phänomene, die in historischen Mythen über Krieg und Frieden, Eifersucht und Liebe, Versuchung oder Größenwahn seit Jahrhunderten festgehalten werden, fanden und finden bis heute Ausdruck in Kunst, Musik und Schauspiel.

Die Fotografien der in Amsterdam geborenen Künstlerin transferieren in diesem Kontext die italienische Commedia dell’Arte um 1700 in die Gegenwart und erschaffen so eine transzendentale Brücke zu dem (zwischen-)menschlichen Schauspiel des 21. Jahrhunderts: Traurige Harlekine und mystische Frauenfiguren schälen sich aus intensiven Hell-Dunkel-Kontraste, die an das barocke Gestaltungsprinzip des Chiaroscuro der Ölmalerei erinnern und werfen dabei einen metaphorisierenden Blick auf die zunehmend gebeutelte Weltbühne.

Mit Augenmerk auf die Vergangenheit und Zukunft der Menschheit sind Betrachtende dazu eingeladen, den innerbildlichen Protagonist:innen eigene Mythen einzuschreiben und deren Geschichte weiterzuerzählen.

Zadelhoffs Faszination für Fotografie begann bereits in der Kindheit und wurde maßgeblich durch ihren künstlerisch veranlagten Vater geprägt. Vertiefende Techniken lernte sie bei dem Fotografen Leopold Beels van Heemstede in Antwerpen, Belgien, wo sie bis heute lebt und arbeitet.

MISHMASH [group]

Mischmasch, borrowed from the Latin ‚miscēre‘ – (to) mix, is an artistic interplay, collection and conglomerate of diverse positions from painting, mixed media and sculpture, which are united under a fluid curatorial concept. Abstract works are placed alongside with figurative works, whose different visual and stylistic languages blur with the individual life stories and artistic narratives in order to create a multi-perspective oeuvre.

Participating artists: Dasha Minkina, Fabio Noack, Frank Krüger, Josephine Kaiser, Lukas Schallmair, Peter Wilde, Sarah Domandl, Tiina Heiska and Yolanda Dorda.

Mischmasch, entlehnt aus dem lateinischen ‚miscēre‘ – (ver)mischen ist ein künstlerisches Zusammenspiel, Sammelsurium und Konglomerat mannigfaltiger Positionen aus Malerei, Mixed Media und Skulptur die sich unter einem fluiden kuratorischen Konzept vereinen. In a world where pixels and brushstrokes converge, Salzburg artist Nae Zerka’s latest exhibition presents an striking symphony of contrasts and opposing forces that explore the delicate balance between the ancient and the modern, the tangible and the virtual.

The title of the exhibition ‚As a Matter of Fact‘ raises the question of the different perspectives and dimensions of truth, reality and perception. The sublime interplay between naturalness and the artificial is reflected both in the portrayed figures, which seem to operate in a seemingly airless space of color and dimension, and in Zerka’s artistic realization, in which classical pastel and oil painting merge with digital methodology.

The exhibition thereby forces us to go beyond passive observation and instead engage on a deeper level with all those human transformation processes in which the boundary between reality and fiction is blurred.

In einer Welt, in der Pixel und Pinselstriche aufeinandertreffen, präsentiert der Salzburger Künstler Nae Zerka in seiner jüngsten Ausstellung eine außergewöhnliche Symphonie von Kontrasten und gegensätzlichen Kräften, die das empfindliche Gleichgewicht zwischen dem Alten und dem Modernen, dem Greifbaren und dem Virtuellen erkunden. 

Der Titel der Ausstellung ‚As a Matter of Fact‘ wirft dabei die Frage nach den verschiedenen Blickwinkeln und Dimensionen von Wahrheit, Wirklichkeit und Wahrnehmung auf. Das sublime Spiel zwischen Natürlichkeit und dem Artifiziellen spiegelt sich dabei sowohl in den porträtierten Figuren wider, die in einem scheinbar luftleeren Raum aus Farbe und Dimension zu agieren scheinen, als auch in Zerkas künstlerischer Umsetzung, in der klassische Pastell- und Ölmalerei mit digitaler Methodik verschmilzt.

Die Ausstellung zwingt uns dadurch, über passive Beobachtung hinauszugehen und uns stattdessen auf einer tieferen Ebene mit all jenen menschlichen Transformationsprozessen auseinanderzusetzen, in denen die Grenze zwischen Wirklichkeit und Fiktion verwässert wird.

In our annual exhibition series HALF A POUND OF ART we unite strong positions of international artists who have something innovative to offer the art world. The exhibited works are exclusively small format with a maximum size of 50 x 50 cm. The exhibition does not follow a thematic curation, crucial factors are the size and excellence of the works. The medium is kept open and offers space for painting and sculpture, as well as for photography, installations, conceptual or video art.  On display are outstanding works that challenge our viewing habits, works that awaken in us a love of detail and, above all, are characterized by technical sophistication.  This exhibition is conceived as an homage to the small format – a sometimes underestimated but highly exciting format in which a maximum of technical expertise and creative refinement accumulates.

In unserer jährlichen Ausstellungsreihe HALF A POUND OF ART vereinen wir starke Positionen internationaler Künstler, die der Kunstwelt Innovatives zu bieten haben. Die ausgestellten Werke sind ausschließlich kleinformatig mit einer maximalen Größe von 50 x 50 cm. Das Medium wird dabei offen gehalten und bietet Raum für Malerei und Skulptur, ebenso wie für Fotografie, Installationen, Konzept- oder Videokunst. Gezeigt werden herausragende Arbeiten, die unsere Sehgewohnheiten herausfordern – Werke, die in uns die Liebe zum Detail wecken und sich vor allem durch technische Raffinesse auszeichnen. Diese Ausstellung ist als Hommage and das Kleinformat konzipiert – ein bisweilen unterschätztes aber höchst spannendes Format, in welchem sich ein Höchstmaß an technischer Versiertheit und kreativer Raffinesse akkummuliert.

MURMURING LINES

Stefan Zsaitsit’s solo exhibition ‚Murmuring Lines‘ is dedicated to the sublime language of images. Through the process of drawing, inner impulses, fragments of past memories or scraps of dreams are woven together and develop into a murmuring, inner-pictorial dialog.
Following their own associations, viewers can sense fragments of this murmur before they melt away again in the graphic fusion of sense and nonsense, reality and absurdity, comedy and tragedy.
In addition to parallels in content, one also encounters the juxtaposition of different drawing styles and possibilities – sketchy, expressive, detailed, delicate. Nevertheless, the question remains: does it all come together, does it become comprehensible? Or does it remain diffuse – oscillating between mute feelings and a murmuring sphere of speaking images?

Stefan Zsaitsits Soloausstellung ‚Murmuring Lines‘ widmet sich der sublimen Sprache der Bilder. Durch den Prozess des Zeichnens werden innere Impulse, Bruchstücke vergangener Erinnerungen oder Traumfetzen miteinander verwoben und entwickeln sich zu einem murmelden, innerbildlichen Dialog.
Eigenen Assoziationen folgend können Betrachtende Fragmente dieses Murmelns erahnen, bevor diese wieder in der zeichnerischen Verschmelzung von Sinn und Unsinn, Realität und Absurdität, Komödie und Tragödie zerfließen.
Neben inhaltlichen Parallelen begegnet man auch dem Nebeneinander verschiedener zeichnerischer Ausprägungen und Möglichkeiten – skizzenhaft, expressiv, detailgetreu, zart. Dennoch bleibt die Frage: Fügt sich all das zusammen, wird es verstehbar? Oder bleibt es diffus – oszillierend zwischen stummen Gefühlen und einer murmelnden Sphäre sprechender Bilder.

RONIT BARANGA [solo]

THE SOUL OF THINGS

Ronit Baranga is a contemporary Israeli artist who lives and works in Israel. As a sculptor and installation artist, she creates figurative art on the border between living and still life, dealing with emotional states and connections. In her upcoming solo exhibition ‚The Soul of Things‘ at Gallery Stephan Stumpf, Baranga explores the subject-object relationship: If the hard cold body of the tea set becomes soft, flesh like and moldable; if the still vessels become doubtfully alive and respond to their surroundings with their own desires, the reality in which the taken-for-granted relationship between the useful object and the person using it, must be redefined.

Ronit Baranga ist eine zeitgenössische israelische Künstlerin, die in Israel lebt und arbeitet. Als Bildhauerin und Installationskünstlerin schafft sie figurative Kunst an der Grenze zwischen augenscheinlicher Lebendigkeit und klassischen Stillleben, die sich mit emotionalen Zuständen und zwischenmenschlichen Verbindungen auseinandersetzt. In ihrer kommenden Einzelausstellung „The Soul of Things“ in der Galerie Stephan Stumpf erforscht Baranga die Beziehung zwischen Subjekt und Objekt: Wenn der harte, kalte Körper eines Teeservices weich, fleischähnlich und formbar wird; wenn regungslose Gefäße fragwürdig lebendig erscheinen und mit eigenen Begehrlichkeiten auf ihre Umgebung reagieren, dann muss die Realität und Selbstverständlichkeit der Beziehung zwischen Gebrauchsgegenstand und dem Menschen, der ihn benutzt, neu definiert werden.

ANNEMARIE FAUPEL [solo]

The Munich artist Annemarie Faupel, a master student of Karin Kneffel, combines both intimate and universal moments of human existence in her solo exhibition ‚Naked Truth‘. The close relationship between joie de vivre and transience, naturalness and artificiality as well as the artistic approach to socially controversial themes such as nudity or old age are create the centerpiece of her work.

Faupel’s unembellished nudes of her ninety-nine-year-old grandmother Elisabeth, for example, spare no wrinkle, no unevenness and no skin discoloration in order to tell a dignified portrait of the years and stories of a person’s life through precisely these physical inscription; to acknowledge the death of a spent and powerless body as part of life and to honour ageing in this way. In the shower rotunda of a Munich swimming pool, naked bodies also present themselves in a natural and quiet intimacy, in which all body forms coexist undisguised, creating a trusting space between strangers. The oscillating spectrum of emotions between the joie de vivre and the bittersweet idea of vanitas ultimately comes together in Faupel’s candy still lifes, whose shimmering candy wrappers or seductively shiny sugar glazes symbolize human cravings and addictions – a form of consumption that only provides temporary and short-term satisfaction, but does not nourish the body and soul in the long term.

Die Münchner Künstlerin Annemarie Faupel, Meisterschülerin von Karin Kneffel, vereint in ihrer Soloausstellung „NAKED TRUTH“ gleichsam intime wie universelle Momente des menschlichen Daseins. Das Näheverhältnis zwischen Lebenslust und Vergänglichkeit, Natürlichkeit und Artifizialität sowie der offene malerische Umgang mit gesellschaftlich kontroversen Themen, wie Nacktheit oder Alter stehen dabei im Vordergrund ihrer Arbeit.

So sparen die ungeschönten Aktbilder Faupels neunundneunzigjähriger Großmutter Elisabeth keine Falte, keine Unebenheit und keine Hautverfärbung aus, um durch eben jene körperlichen Einschreibungen ein würdevolles Portrait der Lebensjahre und Geschichten eines Menschen zu erzählen, den Tod eines verbrauchten, kraftlosen Körpers gleichsam als Teil des Lebens anzuerkennen und das Alter auf diese Weise zu ehren. Auch in der gemalten Rotunde eines Münchner Schwimmbads präsentieren sich nackte Körper in einer selbstverständlichen und stillen Intimität, in der alle Körperformen unverstellt nebeneinander koexistieren und dadurch einen vertrauensvollen Raum zwischen Fremden erschaffen. Das changierendes Emotionsspektrum zwischen dem Genuss des Lebens und des bittersüßen Vanitasgedanken vereint sich schlussendlich in Faupels Candy-Stillleben, deren schillernde Bonbonpapiere oder verführerisch glänzende Zuckerglasuren menschliche Gelüste und Süchte symbolisieren – eine Form des Konsums, der eine temporäre und kurzfristige Befriedigung bereitstellt, durch die Körper und Seele jedoch nicht langfristig genährt werden.

THE NEW PORTRAIT [group]

What characterizes today’s portrait? The portrait is one of the most classic and well known genres in the history of art. The artistic representation of a human being, which is usually limited to the head and chest area, seems more exciting today than ever with the variety of technical and artistic possibilities. But what is it that fascinates us so much about the image of a human being? We want to get closer to what contemporary portraiture is all about!

The exhibition „The New Portrait“ unites extraordinary contemporary artists who each proclaim their specific approach and aesthetic vision. From abstract positions to the figurative, from the colorful to the minimalist, størpunkt displays a wide variety of international artistic positions in order to – through their compilation – give the portrait of today a face.

Was zeichnet das Porträt von heute aus? Das Porträt ist eines der wohl klassischsten Genres der Kunstgeschichte. Die künstlerische Darstellung eines Menschen, die sich zumeist auf den Kopf- und Brustbereich beschränkt, scheint heute mit der Vielfalt an technischen und medialen Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten spannender denn je. Doch was ist es, das uns so sehr am Abbild eines Menschen fasziniert? Wir wollen uns dem annähern, was das zeitgenössische Porträt ausmacht!

Die Ausstellung „The New Portrait“ vereint außergewöhnliche zeitgenössische Künstler, die jeweils ihre spezifische Herangehensweise und Ästhetik proklamieren. Von abstrakten Positionen zum Figurativen, vom Bunten bis hin zum Minimalistischen, inkludiert størpunkt eine breite Vielfalt internationaler künstlerischer Positionen, um in ihrer Zusammenstellung dem Portrait von heute ein Gesicht zu geben.

The Nude-since the renaissance, the nude has been a customary, mostly graphic work preparation in artist studios and academies for the precise reproduction of body proportions and muscle play. Initially reserved exclusively for religious, historical and mythological subjects, its role changed in the course of modern painting in the 19th century. Accordingly, the term expanded in meaning over time. Today it is used to describe any form of non-pornographic, artistic representation of an unclothed human body.

The Nude is a group exhibition that illuminates the nude from a contemporary perspective. Privacy, self-determination, sexualization, objectification, grace, emancipation, #MeToo, seduction, self-confidence, eroticism, artistic aesthetics – never before has nudity been discussed so vividly, finely differentiated and controversially in public discourse as it is today. Every contemporary representation of the nude refers – willingly or unwillingly – to all these discourses. More than ever, artists today use nude representation to explore the limits of what is morally and aesthetically permissible.

Der Akt -seit der Renaissance war der Akt eine in Künstlerateliers und Akademien übliche, meist zeichnerische Werkvorbereitung zur genauen Wiedergabe von Körperproportionen und dem Muskelspiel. Erstmal ausschließlich religiösen, historischen und mythologischen Sujets vorbehalten, veränderte sich seine Rolle im Zuge der modernen Malerei des 19. Jahrhunderts. Demnach erfuhr der Begriff im Laufe der Zeit eine Sinnerweiterung. Heute bezeichnet man damit jede Form der nicht-pornographischen, künstlerischen Darstellung eines unbekleideten menschlichen Körpers.

THE NUDE ist eine Gemeinschaftsausstellung, die den Akt aus zeitgenössischer Perspektive beleuchtet. Intimsphäre, Selbstbestimmung, Sexualisierung, Objektifizierung, Anmut, Emanzipation, #MeToo, Verführung, Erotik, künstlerische Ästhetik – noch nie wurde Nacktheit im öffentlichen Diskurs so spannend, fein-differenziert und kontrovers diskutiert wie heute. Jede zeitgenössische Aktdarstellung rekurriert – willentlich oder unwillentlich – auf all diese Diskurse. Mehr denn je, loten Künstler heute mithilfe der Aktdarstellung die Grenzen des moralisch und ästhetisch Erlaubten aus.

HALF A POUND OF ART [group]

In our annual exhibition series HALF A POUND OF ART we unite strong positions of international artists who have something innovative to offer the art world. The exhibited works are exclusively small format with a maximum size of 50 x 50 cm. The exhibition does not follow a thematic curation, crucial factors are the size and excellence of the works. The medium is kept open and offers space for painting and sculpture, as well as for photography, installations, conceptual or video art.  On display are outstanding works that challenge our viewing habits, works that awaken in us a love of detail and, above all, are characterized by technical sophistication.  This exhibition is conceived as an homage to the small format – a sometimes underestimated but highly exciting format in which a maximum of technical expertise and creative refinement accumulates.

In unserer jährlichen Ausstellungsreihe HALF A POUND OF ART vereinen wir starke Positionen internationaler Künstler, die der Kunstwelt Innovatives zu bieten haben. Die ausgestellten Werke sind ausschließlich kleinformatig mit einer maximalen Größe von 50 x 50 cm. Das Medium wird dabei offen gehalten und bietet Raum für Malerei und Skulptur, ebenso wie für Fotografie, Installationen, Konzept- oder Videokunst. Gezeigt werden herausragende Arbeiten, die unsere Sehgewohnheiten herausfordern – Werke, die in uns die Liebe zum Detail wecken und sich vor allem durch technische Raffinesse auszeichnen. Diese Ausstellung ist als Hommage and das Kleinformat konzipiert – ein bisweilen unterschätztes aber höchst spannendes Format, in welchem sich ein Höchstmaß an technischer Versiertheit und kreativer Raffinesse akkumuliert.

DANIËLLE VAN ZADELHOFF [solo]

BOUND 

In her latest photographs Daniëlle van Zadelhoff explores the vulnerability, insecurity and loneliness of the human being. Emotional conditions, which in times of a global pandemic are more actual than ever before. The exhibition BOUND expresses the basic need to connect with others, but also reveals the challenges that come along with being tied to someone. 

Inspired by Old Masters of Dutch painting such as Rembrandt and Vermeer, Daniëlle van Zadelhoff‘s works show the attempt to translate the formal principles of sixteenth and seventeenth century painting into art photography. Thus, the intense light-dark contrasts created by the selective illumination of the sitter against a dark background are reminiscent of the Baroque design principle of chiaroscuro. Light and shadow swirl around the body, emphasizing muscles, tendons, and bone structures and lend the figures a sense of pronounced plasticity. In the process, she attaches a great deal of artistic attention to ensuring that the almost immaculate skin of her models appears like a smooth surface referring to the painterly usage of the so called blaireau brush. The light comes from a single source outside the frame, creating a theatrical and sometimes sacred atmosphere. 

At once simple and yet surprisingly complex, Daniëlle‘s portraits convey her fascination with the human psyche, using models to interpret innate questions of temptation, vulnerability, doubt and faith as a pretext for self-exploration. However, the works’ titles reveal that the sitters are not of interest to the artist as individual personalities, but rather as projection surfaces of types and personifications.

In ihren neuesten Fotografien erkundet Daniëlle van Zadelhoff die Verletzlichkeit, Unsicherheit und Einsamkeit des Menschen sowie emotionale Zustände, die in Zeiten einer globalen Pandemie aktueller sind als je zuvor. Die Ausstellung BOUND bringt das Grundbedürfnis zum Ausdruck, sich mit anderen zu verbinden, zeigt aber auch die Herausforderungen, die mit der Bindung an einen Menschen einhergehen.

Inspiriert von alten Meistern der niederländischen Malerei wie Rembrandt und Vermeer, zeigen Daniëlle van Zadelhoffs Arbeiten den Versuch, die formalen Prinzipien der Malerei des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts in die Kunstfotografie zu übertragen. So erinnern die intensiven Hell-Dunkel-Kontraste, die durch die gezielte Ausleuchtung des Dargestellten vor dunklem Hintergrund entstehen, an das barocke Gestaltungsprinzip des Hell-Dunkel. Licht und Schatten umspielen den Körper, betonen Muskeln, Sehnen und Knochenstrukturen und verleihen den Figuren eine ausgeprägte Plastizität. Dabei legt sie großen künstlerischen Wert darauf, dass die fast makellose Haut ihrer Modelle wie eine glatte Oberfläche erscheint, die auf die malerische Verwendung des so genannten Blaireau-Pinsels verweist. Das Licht kommt von einer einzigen Quelle außerhalb des Rahmens und schafft eine theatralische und manchmal sakrale Atmosphäre.

Die Porträts von Daniëlle sind einfach und doch überraschend komplex. Sie zeigen ihre Faszination für die menschliche Psyche, indem sie Modelle verwendet, um Fragender Versuchung, der Verletzlichkeit, des Zweifels und des Glaubens als Ausgangspunkt für die Erkundung des Selbst heranzuziehen. Die Titel der Arbeiten verraten jedoch, dass die Porträtierten für die Künstlerin nicht als individuelle Persönlichkeiten von Interesse sind, sondern als Projektionsflächen von Typisierungen und Personifikationen.

THE PUPPET THEATER

Ronit Baranga’s ceramic sculptures are hauntingly lifelike and frisky. There is always a dichotomy to her work and an element of the unexpected. Inbuilt contradictions, sometimes playful, sometimes threatening, that surprise, shock or unsettle the viewer. Based on her series The Grave Watchers’ Childhood, that was influenced by two ancient figures – „Tomb Guardians“ from the Tang Dynasty (618-906 A.D.) – Baranga’s new work continues the examination of baby sweetness and innocence in contradistinction to a wild and uncontrollable side inherent in children.

For this purpose, the artist uses the motif of the putto, a naked angelic child figure, that is present in sculpture and painting since antiquity and transforms it as an antithesis in a cute demon with horns, fangs and claws. Originally embodying love, innocence and beauty, the childishness in Baranga’s works represents challenging emotions such as anger, frustration, desire and recalcitrance. On the one hand, several of her demon sculptures are forming a threatening and dynamic unit by responding to their environment and interacting with each other. On the other hand, they are meticulously placed around realistic looking human beings like inanimate glove puppets. This divergent approach raises questions about role playing, subconsciousness and the power of emotions: Are the little devils personifications of uncontrollable feelings? And if so, do they prevail or are they merely puppets who only come to life whenever the infantile player wants to?

Die Keramikskulpturen von Ronit Baranga sind eindringlich, lebensecht und verspielt. Ihre Arbeiten sind stets zwiespältig und enthalten ein Element des Unerwarteten. Eingebaute Widersprüche, manchmal spielerisch, manchmal bedrohlich, überraschen, schockieren oder verunsichern die Betrachtenden. Ausgehend von ihrer Serie „The Grave Watchers‘ Childhood“, die von zwei antiken Figuren – „Grabwächtern“ aus der Tang-Dynastie (618-906 n. Chr.) -beeinflusst wurde, setzt Baranga in ihrem neuen Werk die Untersuchung der kindlichen Lieblichkeit und Unschuld fort, die im Gegensatz zu deren wilder und unkontrollierbaren Seite steht.

Dazu verwendet die Künstlerin das Motiv des Putto, einer nackten, engelhaften Kinderfigur, die seit der Antike in Skulptur und Malerei präsent ist und verwandelt diese als Gegenpol in einen infantilen Dämon mit Hörnern, Reißzähnen und Krallen. Ursprünglich verkörperte das Kindliche in Barangas Werken Liebe, Unschuld und Schönheit, heute steht es für herausfordernde Emotionen wie Wut, Frustration, Verlangen und Widerspenstigkeit. Einerseits bilden mehrere ihrer Dämonenskulpturen eine bedrohliche und dynamische Einheit, indem sie auf ihre Umgebung reagieren und miteinander interagieren. Andererseits sind sie akribisch um realistisch aussehende Menschen herum platziert, die wie leblose Handpuppen wirken. Diese unterschiedliche Herangehensweise wirft Fragen über Rollenspiele, Unterbewusstsein und die Macht der Gefühle auf: Sind die kleinen Teufelchen Personifikationen unkontrollierbarer Gefühle? Und wenn ja, setzen sie sich durch oder sind sie lediglich Marionetten, die nur dann zum Leben erwachen, wenn kindliche Spielende es wollen?

DEAD ARE ALL GODS: NOW WE DESIRE THE POSTHUMAN TO LIVE

Opening the Future constitutes an immensely powerful and sophisticated body of work, which pursues the aim of exploring new posthuman figurativeness. The dominant theme addresses the subject of transgressive corporality and encompasses the contexts of future, morphological freedom and human enhancement technologies.

The logical and inevitable progress of technology evolution implies the emergence of new paradigms of gender, body and identity. The body becomes a symptom of the unnatural, edited and superior life form, posing a question of the possible shift of ethical lines and a change in definition of what is human.

Opening the Future extends the discourse of the Post Human, a visionary series of exhibitions curated by Jeffrey Deitch in 1992, which manifested the embrace of artificiality and projected the role of artists beyond redefining art, towards redefining life. The work of Joanna Grochowska integrates with the concepts of human enhancement technologies, the ideas of Elon Musk, Raymond Kurzweil and Jennifer Doudna, awarded the Nobel Prize for the development of a revolutionary genome editing method; seeking the new aesthetics of the future.

„Opening the Future“ ist ein immens kraftvolles und anspruchsvolles Werk, das das Ziel verfolgt, eine neue posthumane Figürlichkeit zu erforschen. Das beherrschende Thema ist die transgressive Körperlichkeit und umfasst Kontexte der Zukunft, der morphologischen Freiheit und der Technologien zur Optimierung des Menschen.

Der logische und unvermeidliche Fortschritt der technologischen Entwicklung impliziert das Aufkommen neuer Paradigmen von Geschlecht, Körper und Identität. Der Körper wird zum Symptom einer unnatürlichen, bearbeiteten und überlegenen Lebensform und wirft die Frage nach einer möglichen Verschiebung der ethischen Richtlinien sowie einer veränderten Definition des Menschlichen auf.

Der Werkkorpus „Opening the Future“ erweitert den Diskurs zu „Post Human“, einer visionären Ausstellungsreihe, die 1992 von Jeffrey Deitch kuratiert wurde und die Annahme des Artifiziellen manifestiert. Die Rolle der Künstler:innen wird dabei von der reinen Neudefinition der Kunst, auf die Neudefinition des Lebens an sich projiziert. Das Werk von Joanna Grochowska integriert Konzepte und Technologien zur Verbesserung des Menschen – so beispielsweise Ideen von Elon Musk, Raymond Kurzweil oder Jennifer Doudna, die den Nobelpreis für die Entwicklung einer revolutionären Methoder zur Genom-Editierung erhielt – und sucht darin nach einer neuen Ästhetik der Zukunft.
